How to Pick a Wedding Gown that Flatters Your Shape

All eyes are on the bride as she walks down the aisle in the beautiful wedding gown toward her beloved grooms. On the day when all eyes are on you and you are the center of attention, wear a gown that makes you feel lovely and confident. Walking into a bridal salon can be an overwhelming experience, with literally hundreds of beautiful choices. It helps to start out with some idea of what to look for by knowing ahead of time what type of gown is most flattering to your unique figure.

Whether you are have a curvy hourglass figure, are a little heavier on the bottom, bigger on top, tall, short or plus sized; there are certain cuts that will flatter more than others. Following are some guidelines to consider when selecting a wedding style.

Hourglass Shape Bride

The Hourglass shape is the feminine ideal, with a small, defined waistline between balanced top and hips. This feminine form is flattered by figure hugging styles, such as the mermaid shaped gown that hugs the curves and flares out at the bottom. Mermaid shaped gowns are at the height of wedding fashion right now. Women with hourglass figures are also flattered by pretty ball gowns with a figure hugging bodice and a wide skirt. Small waists can also be emphasized by a splash of color, so a colorful sash adds a touch of panache to the bridal look.

Pear Shaped Bride

Women who are pear shaped, or triangle shaped, have a smaller bust line in proportion to their bottom half. The pear shaped woman can create balance by wearing a tailored bodice with a full skirt. Tops that bring the focus of the eyes upward, such as a halter top, brings the attention to the top and minimizes attention to the bottom. Cap sleeves add volume on the top which minimizes attention to the lower half. The princess shaped gown is great for brides who want to minimizes hips and stomach.

Apple Shaped Bride

Apple Shapes, or inverted triangle shaped, women have shoulder and bust that are wider than hips. Full skirts fill out the bottom half, giving an illusion of a smaller top. Details on the skirt, such as ruffles, flounces or beading draw the eye downward, downplaying the upper half. Bolero jacket is a chic way to add coverage and balance the look.

Rectangle Shaped Bride

Rectangle shaped women have waists that are about the same size as their shoulder and hips. A dress with a full skirt and defined waist gives the appearance of curves. Ball gowns with full skirt add feminine curves to the hips. A goddess-inspired sheath, with a empire waist flows over a full tummy. A-line gowns can help to disguise full hips and balance the torso and bust.

Tall Bride

Statuesque women, taller than 5′8, look glamorous in A-lines, flowing sheathes, fitted bodices, voluminous skirts and can carry off pretty details, such as ribbons and bows.

Petite Bride

Petite brides, 5′4″ or under, can elongate their look with an A-line dress with a fitted bodice. The mermaid silhouette is a great proportionate look without being overwhelming to a small figure. Shapes such as halter neckline and empire waists help to create the illusion of height. Details at the hem, such as ruffles or beading, draw the eye downward and make the legs look longer.

Full Figured Bride

Full figured brides, sizes 14W plus, can flaunt their curves with a flattering A-lines with is slimming and elegant. Deep V-necks draw the attention to the bust line and are flattering to women who are larger on top. Covering the arms with sleeves balances the figure and adds coverage.
