Centerpieces for a wedding or other event can be done elegantly and simply for a relatively cheap price. When it came to my wedding I had a month and a half to put it together and a very small budget. I chose to go with the theme of candles as opposed to flowers for both an aesthetic reason as well as financial. I came up with some of the most beautiful centerpieces for around $75 total, and that was even after giving in to a couple flowers for my mother’s sanity.
First of all I attacked garage sales. I was fortunate enough to be planning my wedding for the end of August and so I had the entire summer to scour garage sales for assorted glassware. I got a whole bunch of candles holders, vases, and assorted tealights for literally pennies. Then my maid of honor and I moved on to the local crafting stores. These places can be your best friend when you are doing things yourself. We loaded up our cart with different sizes of candles, beads, and lace. We also grabbed some glassware to complete the look and I went home and set to work.
At first I was planning on having round tables and created looks for that and they came out beautiful. What I did for these was to layer some of the beads in the bottom of a piece of glassware around a taper candle or two, but not the whole way up so that the candle could still be seen and have a longer burning time. Then surrounding the center candle piece I added tealights in circular containers to stretch out the piece. Lastly, I sprinkled some of the left over beads in between all of the glass and candles so that it would pick up the sparkle from the flame. Another option to maximize the sparkle from the flame would be to add a mirror under the entire piece, but it just never looked right for me but it could work for you.
Well once we settled on the location we realized that we were going to have to use long banquet tables, not ideal but it worked. So what we did is continued to use some of larger candle and glassware pieces as “centerpieces” but then scattered the assorted candles and candle holders throughout the rest of the table. And, like I said, my mother was putting flowers on some of these tables come hell or high water so on every third table or so we placed an arrangement created out of Sam’s Club flower bunches. The contrast between the flowers and the candles gave a perfect look that pulled together the scorching late summer evening into rainy summer night all while looking like it cost a fortune.
