Wedding Centerpieces on a Budget

Weddings can be pricey, and there are all sorts of places where a bride can cut costs at her wedding. A fun and creative way to cut costs, is to create your own centerpieces for the tables at your wedding reception.

One centerpiece idea is to make an arrangement using spray painted branches rather than flowers. This centerpiece idea is especially good for an autumn wedding. Gather branches of varying lengths from about 1 to 3 feet tall. Gather an abundance as you are going to fill a vase full of them as you would a bouquet. Lay the branches out on newspaper outdoors, and spray them with a metallic golden spray paint which you can find at any craft store. Use silver if it fits better with your wedding theme, or for a winter wedding. Later, turn all the branches to the other side and spray the unpainted side. Let dry. Rent glass vases from your caterer and fill the vases with the metallic branches in arrangements of varying sizes and lengths. Your result should be a unique alternative to a bouquet, a glistening centerpiece that costs next to nothing.

Another centerpiece idea for a wedding are baskets of fruit arrangements. Fruits can be selected depending on the appropriate season. For example, a spring or summer wedding centerpiece could include small white wicker baskets, filled with lemons limes and oranges, topped with sprigs of cherry blossom. A good fruit for the summertime would be granny smith apples. An autumn or winter wedding could include a shallower dark basket full of pears, apples, and grapes. Fruit may be picked seasonally, or for their color.

A shoreline wedding centerpiece could incorporate shells you have gathered on your own. The best thing to do in this case is to start gathering shells early, so you have enough by your wedding day. The shells should be soaked in bleach to remove bacteria and to whiten the shells. Use a 5 gallon bucket, 2 gallons of fresh water from the tap, and 1/2 gallon of bleach, then add your shells. In about 3 days, remove the shells, rinse them in fresh water and allow them to dry. Once you have an abundance of bleached white shells, they may be arranged in small glass vases with a silk ribbon tied around the vase. Use three different sized shell filled vases and incorporate pillar candles of different sizes within the shell centerpiece.
